2015 was a banner year for wireless charging. In the past year, IKEA’s entrance into the wireless charging industry highlighted the potential and value of wireless charging for the consumer furniture industry. On the smartphone side, Samsung’s adoption of both QI and PMA wireless charging standards in their Galaxy S6 Series generated huge waves and support for the industry as one of the largest mobile phone manufacturers in the world committed to the technology.

With increasing application of wireless charging in commercial spaces, we are seeing increasing demand for wireless charging by consumers, whether they’re at work, at home, or out for entertainment at a restaurant. As more mobile phone manufacturers incorporate wireless charging into their phones in 2016, widespread adoption of the technology will drive further development of infrastructure to support wireless charging in every part of a consumers’ life from work to home.

Flagship Phones Supporting Wireless Charging

2016 looks to be a very exciting year for wireless charging enabled devices. Major phone manufacturers are gearing up to incorporate wireless charging in their flagship phones. Samsung’s latest flagship, the Samsung Galaxy S7, stays true to their commitment to wireless charging and continues to support both Qi and PMA wireless charging standards.

Apple’s iPhone 7, set for release in September 2016, has been heavily rumoured to support wireless charging technology as well. Details on the specific technology and standards being adopted are unclear, but this will be very significant for the wireless charging industry as the number one market shareholder of mobile devices in North America enters the market.

Beyond that, other smartphones manufacturers such as LG and Microsoft are also expected to incorporate wireless charging into some of their devices coming out in 2016.

What to Expect for the Rest of 2016

2016 is shaping up to be a significant year for wireless charging as device manufacturers race to include wireless charging in their devices. A recent survey by Carphone Warehouse indicated that wireless charging is now the most requested feature for smartphones. We expect to see significant announcements from Mobile World Congress (MWC) that is currently underway.

Pike Research did a study in 2010 expecting wireless charging revenues to hit $11.8 billion market by 2020. We are now halfway to 2020 and just about hitting the tipping point for massive growth in the industry. We’re excited to see the industry grow in 2016 and how wireless charging can impact business results for corporations, restaurants and hospitality venues.
